In a time when music is increasingly consumed in fragments, skipped, shuffled, and fed to us by algorithms, spaces that invite us to slow down and truly listen feel almost radical. Tucked into Ljubljana’ thriving cultural landscape, TOZD exists in that rare in-between: not quite a bar, not quite a club, but something more relaxed. They reflect a deeper philosophy about presence, connection, and the art of listening, one that feels increasingly necessary in today’s fast-moving world.
Q: TOZD feels like a third space for music lovers. Not home, not the club, but something in between. A cultural living room. A meeting point for collectors, DJs, curious listeners and creatives. In an age of speed and algorithmic overload, you’re celebrating slow culture. What’s the philosophy behind building a space like this, and what kind of atmosphere were you determined to protect?
A: We wanted a place with great sound and a calm, welcoming atmosphere where people actually listen. Not a club, not home, but something in between. A living room for music lovers.
The speakers are Klipsch and custom-installed in the bar, with two positioned above the counter and two in the second room.
In the first room, below the seating area, there is a custom-made bass unit.
From the start, the focus was on high-fidelity music and care: good acoustics, a sound system that lets records breathe, and music that invites you to slow down. Just as important was creating a meeting point where artists, DJs, designers and curious listeners naturally cross paths, talk, and share ideas.
We were determined to protect a relaxed, unforced vibe. No rush, no loud distractions, no pressure to party. Just quality music in the background, thoughtful programming, and a space where people feel comfortable staying, listening, and connecting. In a fast, noisy world, TOZD is meant to be a pause, a place to slow down and be present.

Q: Community feels central to what you’re doing. What role does TOZD play in Ljubljana’s wider music ecosystem? Is this the kind of place where friendships are formed before they spill onto the dancefloor? Do you see TOZD as part of the city’s nightlife infrastructure or as something operating parallel to it?
A: Yes, community is central. TOZD is a meeting point where people connect. Friendships often start here: people meet, chat, swap ideas, and sometimes those friendships later spill onto the dancefloor elsewhere.
We’re not a nightlife venue in the traditional sense. We don’t chase loud late-night partying or club peak hours. Instead we operate parallel to the city’s nightlife: quieter, slower, and community-first, a place where ideas and collaborations are born.
Q: Ljubljana is often described as a small capital, but culturally it punches above its weight. Do you see it as a kind of ‘micro-capital’ with a particularly refined music audience? Is there something distinctive about Slovenian listeners?

A: Yes, Ljubljana really does feel like a “micro-capital.” Because the city is small, attention gets concentrated: audiences are curious, well informed and generous with their time. People here tend to care about context and quality.
Q: We’re surrounded by sound 24/7, but real listening feels increasingly rare. What does listening mean to you beyond simply hearing music? And how does that idea shape the story you’re telling through TOZD?
A: Good observation, we completely agree. Real listening is about attention, not just sound. It’s becoming rare, or at least it was when we started almost 14 years ago. Since then, more and more people have been looking for places where they can actually sit, listen and enjoy carefully selected, quality music.
At TOZD this shapes everything we do. It’s not only about good design. It’s about a strong music program, a proper sound system, and the people who care about both. When those things come together, listening becomes something shared and meaningful, not just background noise.
